I was looking into some AAA alternatives. Currently it is my father you is a AAA member and I just use his membership card if needed. Yesterday my friend told me that most American Express cards offer free road side assistance, but a max of 4 calls/year. Also you are limited to being towed in a 10 mile radius. This is a free perk to most of the American Express cards.
Another option is getting some roadside assistance coverage through your car insurance. I think my insurance company quoted me $24/year for this, but I do not know the specifics.
Overall people may want to consider checking their credit cards to see if anything like this offered and if so what is its terms and conditions.
